Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Regenerative Therapy?
Regenerative therapy uses biological material taken directly from your own body to help support the treatment of various conditions and injuries. It is a minimally invasive, non-surgical, and safe procedure that is typically performed on the same day.
Your consultant will determine which regenerative therapy is most appropriate for your individual case. Available treatment options include:
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
- Adipose-Derived Cell Therapy
- Mesenchymal Cell Therapy
- Prolotherapy
- GOLDIC® Therapy
In some cases, a combination of more than one treatment protocol may be recommended. For certain patients, the treatment process may involve a series of injections administered over multiple sessions.
The choice of treatment is made by your consultant based on your individual health needs.
Please note: The availability of certain treatments may vary by clinic location. Contact us to learn more about the treatment options currently available in Poland.
What Does the Complete Treatment Package Include?
The complete treatment package includes regenerative therapy together with physiotherapy support. It also includes personalized aftercare, detailed post-treatment instructions, and a brace assessment if required for your specific condition.
Can More Than One Area Be Treated at the Same Time?
Yes, it is possible to treat more than one area during the same session. However, this depends on your doctor’s recommendation and your individual case.
Treatment plans are tailored to each patient to ensure the most appropriate treatment protocol and the best possible outcome. Your doctor will consider several factors, including your age, lifestyle, existing medical conditions, coexisting health conditions, and any other relevant clinical considerations.
What Are the Next Steps If I'm Interested?
You can call us in Poland at +48 71 707 90 00 to schedule a consultation, or request a callback today to arrange an appointment at one of our clinics.
Who Will I Meet During My Consultation and What Should I Expect?
You will meet with one of our experienced orthopaedic surgeons or consultants. During your consultation, the specialist will review your medical history to better understand your symptoms, examine the affected joint, and identify the source of your pain and any mobility issues.
If necessary, diagnostic imaging—typically an MRI scan—may be arranged. Your consultant will also discuss the available treatment options with you, including their potential benefits and any associated risks.
Where Do the Cells Used for Treatment Come From?
The cells used in regenerative therapies are taken from your own body.
Depending on the recommended treatment, they may be obtained from adipose (fat) tissue, usually collected from the abdominal area or thigh. If bone marrow aspirate is required, it is typically collected from the pelvic bone (iliac crest).
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is generally no more uncomfortable than a routine dental procedure.
Does My Age Matter?
Regenerative therapy is a modern treatment approach that is also available in Poland and may help people living with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. There are no strict age limits for treatment eligibility.
Research suggests that older age does not necessarily reduce the effectiveness of regenerative therapies. Your suitability for treatment will be assessed individually during your consultation.
Do Aspirin and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Affect PRP Treatment?
Yes. Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can suppress the body’s early healing response, which plays an important role in maximizing the potential benefits of PRP therapy.
It is generally recommended to avoid NSAIDs for two weeks before and two weeks after PRP treatment whenever medically appropriate. If you purchase over-the-counter medication, ask your pharmacist whether it contains anti-inflammatory ingredients.
Important: Never stop taking prescribed medication without first consulting your doctor.
Will I Need to Stay in Hospital?
What Is the Difference Between Autologous and Allogeneic Cells?
Autologous cells are cells taken from your own body.
Allogeneic cells are obtained from a donor, such as umbilical cord blood, amniotic membrane, placenta, or dental pulp. These cells come from another person rather than from your own body.
At Medica Stem Cells, we use only autologous cells, meaning your treatment uses your own biological material.
What Are the Benefits of Regenerative Therapy Compared with Surgery?
Regenerative therapy offers several potential advantages over surgical treatment, including:
- Local anaesthetic only – Treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, with no need for general anaesthesia.
- Shorter recovery time – Most patients recover more quickly than after surgery.
- Lower procedural risk – Avoids many of the risks associated with major surgery and general anaesthesia.
- No surgical incisions or scars – Treatments are delivered using targeted injections rather than open surgery.
- Uses your own biological material – Autologous therapies use cells or blood components from your own body, eliminating the risk of immune rejection associated with donor tissue.
Is the Procedure Painful?
The procedure varies depending on your treatment plan. Local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort, and you will remain awake throughout the procedure. Our team will ensure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment.
How Does the Treatment Work?
Regenerative therapy is performed as an outpatient procedure and usually takes up to two hours. General anaesthesia is not required, and many patients do not need prescription pain medication after treatment.
Most people can return to office-based work within one to two weeks and resume physical activity sooner than is typically possible after invasive surgery, depending on their recovery and their doctor’s advice.
During the procedure, enhanced PRP and/or cell concentrates are collected from your own body, prepared, and then injected into the affected area.
Once administered, these cells and biological components respond to signals released by injured tissue. They may help support the body’s natural healing processes by promoting tissue repair, encouraging regeneration, and helping regulate inflammation. Many patients experience gradual improvements in pain and joint function over time.
The anti-inflammatory response typically develops over the first two to three months, with further improvement often occurring as healing continues. For joint conditions, the full benefits of treatment may not be apparent for up to six months.
Recovery and treatment outcomes vary depending on factors such as the condition being treated, its severity, your age, lifestyle, overall health, and any existing medical conditions.
What Is the Recovery Time?
Recovery varies depending on the condition being treated.
After treatment, patients are generally advised to take it easy for approximately two weeks. During this period, prolonged walking or standing should be avoided, particularly following knee or hip treatment.
If you have a desk job or work as a driver, you may be able to return to work immediately, depending on your comfort level and your doctor’s advice. After two weeks, activity can usually be increased gradually.
You will receive personalised post-treatment instructions on the day of your procedure.
When Can I Expect to See Results?
Regenerative therapy works by supporting your body’s natural healing processes, so results develop gradually rather than immediately.
Many patients begin to notice reduced pain and improved mobility within approximately 30 days. However, for joint treatments, the full benefits may not become apparent for up to six months.
The speed and extent of improvement vary from person to person and depend on factors such as the condition being treated, its severity, age, lifestyle, overall health, and other medical conditions.
How Long Do the Results Last?
The benefits of regenerative therapy may last for many years, although this varies from person to person.
Treatment outcomes depend on several factors, including your lifestyle, overall health, any underlying medical conditions, the condition being treated, and its severity. Because regenerative therapy works with your body’s natural healing processes, repeat treatment may be considered if clinically appropriate.
What Research Supports Regenerative Therapy?
Regenerative therapies and advanced cell-based treatments have been used in clinical practice for many years to help manage conditions affecting the knees, hips, and shoulders.
A growing body of published clinical research has investigated the use of regenerative therapies for chronic musculoskeletal pain and degenerative joint conditions. Studies have reported improvements in pain, function, and quality of life for appropriately selected patients, although results vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.
Regenerative medicine offers a minimally invasive treatment option that supports the body’s natural healing processes and may be considered as an alternative to more invasive procedures for suitable patients.
You can also explore patient testimonials on the Medica Stem Cells website to learn more about the experiences of people who have undergone treatment at our clinics.
Is Regenerative Therapy Safe?
Regenerative therapy is generally considered a less invasive treatment option than procedures such as hip or knee replacement surgery because it does not require general anaesthesia.
The treatment uses your own biological material, which eliminates the risk of immune rejection associated with donor tissue and avoids the risk of transmitting infectious diseases from donor cells.
As with any medical procedure, there is a small risk of complications, including infection at the injection site. To minimise this risk, all procedures are performed under strict sterile conditions.
Are the Results of Regenerative Therapy Guaranteed?
No. As with any medical treatment, outcomes vary from patient to patient and cannot be guaranteed.
Regenerative therapy works by supporting your body’s natural healing processes, so the results depend on several factors, including:
- The type and severity of your condition
- Your age
- Your overall health
- Your lifestyle
- Any underlying medical conditions
Factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, being overweight, limited physical activity, poor adherence to physiotherapy, abnormal gait, and low motivation during recovery may reduce the effectiveness of treatment.
While many patients experience meaningful improvements, a small percentage may not achieve the desired results.
